One of the categories on the Library Lady's 2019 Book Challenge is to read a middle grades novel. Now, especially if you don't have or teach kids in that age group, you may not know where to start in finding a middle grades book. So, it's the Library Lady to the rescue!!!

Here are 4 of my favorite middle grade books:
1. Amal Unbound by Aisha Saeed is a great introduction to the concept of modern day slavery. It isn't explicit in any of it's descriptions, but it tells how a family can fall prey to the trickery of a human trafficker.
2. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery is another classic for the list. To me it is a must read novel! I loved it as a child and I recently reread it and love it just as much as an adult! It fit in the genre of historical fiction, but its descriptions of Anne with her flowery and dramatic language are pure whimsy. I can't wait to read this book with my daughter!
3. The Giver by Lois Lowry is, in my opinion, the quintessential dystopian novel. It may even be the first young adult dystopian book. Set in a society that appears to be ideal - no war, no poverty, no conflict of any kind, 12 year old Jonas receives his life assignment. As he learns what it means to be the Giver, his eyes are opened to what his world is really like.
4. Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper - This book is amazing - it follows the journey of a young girl with cerebral palsy who finally gets the technology that allows her to communicate at the age of 11. For years she has been dismissed as mentally challenged because she couldn't talk, and now she is finally able to prove that she can't be defined by her disability. This one is a MUST READ for students, teachers, and parents! Seriously! Read it!
Have you read any of these books?
